Fund A Cure with the Adams Family | Breakthrough T1D Wisconsin Gala 2025

About

Dear Friends and Family,

We are honored to share that our family has been selected to be the featured Fund A Cure Family at the Breakthrough T1D Gala (formerly JDRF) on March 1, 2025. This is an incredible opportunity and an important milestone in our journey with Type 1 Diabetes (T1D), a journey that began just over a year ago.

It started with small, seemingly insignificant changes for Levi. He was constantly thirsty, devouring foot-long sandwiches as if they were a snack, and yet, he lacked his usual energy. At first, we chalked it up to the cold, dry January weather or a typical growth spurt at age 10. But when frequent trips to the bathroom started interrupting his sleep, we knew something wasn’t right.

On Monday, January 22, 2024, a visit to the pediatrician confirmed our fears. Despite his huge appetite, Levi had lost 6 pounds over the previous six weeks. His blood glucose level was a dangerously high 641, and his hemoglobin A1c was 9.7. At that moment, we understood that Levi’s life was going to be changed forever. He was admitted to American Family Children’s Hospital, where we began our new life navigating the complexities of Type 1 Diabetes. We are thankful for the knowledgeable, patient, and empathetic medical providers who showed such care for Levi and our family during this time.

Living with T1D touches every aspect of Levi’s daily life. Simple activities like eating, exercising, or even just playing with friends require constant planning and vigilance. The balance between insulin, carbohydrates, activity levels, and numerous other factors is a constant effort to hit an ever-moving target. Levi’s blood sugar levels can shift quickly, making him feel weak and shaky during lows, or sluggish and irritable during highs. Every day is a delicate balancing act, and it’s one that Levi handles with incredible resilience. This was not the type of rapid maturity we wished for our pre-teen son, but he impresses us every day with his adaptability and intelligence in managing this chronic medical condition.

To manage his T1D, Levi wears both an insulin pump and a continuous glucose monitor (CGM), devices that he’ll likely need for the rest of his life. While these technologies have made daily management more convenient, they still require constant monitoring, adjusting, and occasional troubleshooting. When devices malfunction, it can lead to hours of fear and uncertainty. We are fortunate to have adequate insurance coverage for this life-saving technology, but we also recognize that is not the reality for all children or families. Prolonged high or low blood sugar can be life-threatening, reminding us of the seriousness of this disease. Complications from T1D emphasize the importance of keeping blood glucose levels well-managed. While advances in diabetes care have come a long way, T1D remains an incurable disease.

During his hospitalization, Levi tearfully vowed to find a cure for diabetes so that no one else would have to face what he’s going through. And this is where you come in. We’re asking for your support in helping fund research to make that cure a reality.

Breakthrough T1D is a global organization dedicated to improving the lives of people with Type 1 Diabetes. They connect top researchers, advocate for better policies, and work to improve access to care with the ultimate goal of finding a cure. Their work gives us hope that a cure will one day be possible for Levi and for all those living with T1D.

We would be so grateful if you could join us at the One Night, One Mission Breakthrough T1D Gala on March 1st, 2025, in Madison. This inspiring event will bring together individuals and organizations committed to advancing diabetes research. Levi and our family will be featured at the event, and Levi will speak about his journey and the importance of finding a cure. Our goal is simple: we want a cure for T1D in Levi’s lifetime.

There are many ways you can support this cause:

  1. Donating to our Fund A Cure family site
  2. Attend the Gala, invitation mailed at later date.
  3. Donating an auction item

Every gift, no matter the size, will make a meaningful impact on the lives of those affected by Type 1 Diabetes.

On behalf of our entire family, we are deeply honored to be selected as the Fund A Cure Family, and we are incredibly grateful for your support. Your generosity will help bring us one step closer to a cure.

With heartfelt thanks and appreciation,

The Adams Family
