Managing the stress and emotions of T1D

Your mental health is a very important part of living with type 1 diabetes (T1D). Thriving with T1D starts with your emotional well-being.

T1D can affect every single moment of the day and every part of your life. Taking care of your mental health with type 1 diabetes is just as important as managing your blood-glucose levels and taking your insulin.

Tips on seeking out help

Tips from Dr. Mark Heyman, a diabetes psychologist and a Certified Diabetes Care and Education Specialist who has been living with T1D for over 25 years.

Whether you live with type 1 diabetes or are a caregiver for someone who does, there can be days when it all feels like too much. If you’re feeling overwhelmed by T1D, remember these simple but powerful tools to help you manage your stress:

Self-compassion

When diabetes feels like too much to handle, treat yourself with the same kindness you’d show a close friend in your situation. Give yourself grace—it’s normal to feel this way when managing a complex condition like T1D.

Mindfulness

Pay attention to how you’re feeling (both physically and emotionally) in the present moment, without judgment. Staying present builds awareness, which can help you manage stress and anxiety.

Gratitude

Even when T1D feels hard, reflect on what you’re thankful for. Practicing gratitude can help shift your mindset, reduce stress, and boost your overall well-being.
