A highly esteemed pediatric endocrinologist at Stanford, Dr. Bruce Buckingham has demonstrated exceptional dedication to our mission, caring for and transforming the lives of countless families in the T1D community. We are delighted to honor his profound impact and commitment.
Dr. Buckingham is a Professor Emeritus-Active in the Department of Pediatric Endocrinology at Stanford. His research focuses on continuous glucose monitoring and the development of closed-loop systems. He was the Principal Investigator at Stanford for the Breakthrough T1D (then JDRF) multicenter CGM study, as well as studies with the NIH DirecNet multicenter study group to assess CGM use. He conducted closed-loop studies with academic groups such as UVA, RPI, UC Santa Barbara, Boston University and Cambridge, England. For the last several years he has been involved with the testing of commercial systems from Medtronic (670G and 780G), Tandem (Basal IQ and Control IQ), Insulet (Omnipod 5 Horizon), and Bionic Pancreas (iLet). He is currently funded by Breakthrough T1D to assess the effect of closed loop control and/or verapamil on maintenance of insulin secretion following onset of type 1 diabetes.
Dr. Buckingham’s other interests have included the development and assessment of extended wear infusion sets, and the effect of dysglycemia on neurocognition and neuroimaging in children with diabetes. Through these studies he has significantly advanced closed-loop technology, improving daily life and long-term outcomes for those managing T1D.
Dr. Buckingham also serves as a partner and advisor on the T1D Fund (a Breakthrough T1D Venture), the Breakthrough T1D Northern California Chapter Medical Providers Council, and has participated and supported Breakthrough T1D social events and the Walk team for Stanford for many years. He is beloved and deeply admired in our T1D community.
Dr. Buckingham is a champion of the T1D community and longtime friend of Breakthrough T1D. We are pleased to honor him at the 2025 Breakthrough T1D Hope Gala.
