Myles Mohan Chosen as Children’s Congress Delegate
in General
The Mid Jersey Chapter is proud to announce that 15 year old, Myles Mohan, will be joining over 100 children in Washington, DC as a delegate for the 2013 Children’s Congress, July 8-10th. While on Capitol Hill, Myles will be meeting with some of the top decision-makers in the U.S. government to explain what life with type 1 diabetes (T1D) is like and why research to find a cure for diabetes and its complications is so critical.
Myles was diagnosed when he was only 11 months old. Now a sophomore at North Hunterdon Regional High School, Myles recognizes just how many obstacles he has overcome in his 14 years of living with T1D.
He is the only student with diabetes involved in his high school’s sports program; he is part of the soccer, lacrosse and wrestling teams. Not only does Myles love sports, but he aspires to be a doctor who focuses on sports medication,“Physical activity has played a huge role in my well being and I want to promote and maintain that with elite athletes.”
Like many others living with T1D, Myles is hopeful for a cure. There have been times when he has had to sit out of practice because his blood sugar was either too high or too low, or miss class because it is hard for him to concentrate with poor blood sugar levels. Even though, at times, diabetes has affected Myles in school it has never affected his school work. He is enrolled in AP and honors classes, holds a 3.0 GPA and loves math and science.
Myles has appeared in Breakthrough T1D PSAs, spoken at events, and participated in the Promise to Remember Me campaign. He also volunteers with the Mid Jersey Chapter – he offers advice and mentorship through the chapter’s outreach program and has walked in the Walk to Cure Diabetes since 1998. Apart from diabetes, Myles is a second degree Black Belt in Tae Kwon Do, a youth instructor and a soccer coach.
Although T1D has made the road to Myles’ accomplishments more challenging, he has pushed that much harder and overcome these obstacles.
