A Look Back at the 2020 Breakthrough T1D One Walk: Walking Toward A World Without T1D
This year, more than 1,000 walkers across Colorado, Utah and Wyoming raised more than $530,000 to make an impact on the future of type 1 diabetes research through the Breakthrough T1D One Walk.
November 1 was Type 1 Diabetes Day (T1Day) – the first day of National Diabetes Awareness Month (NDAM) and a day to recognize the bravery and resilience of those who are living with type 1 diabetes (T1D).
But November 1 was also a day to celebrate the more than 40,000 walkers and more than 10,000 teams nationwide that participated in Breakthrough T1D One Walk.
This year’s One Walk was different. To follow COVID-19 safety protocols, rather than attending local and in-person Breakthrough T1D One Walk events, the T1D Community was encouraged to build teams and walk on their own. Our collective goal? To walk 1.6 million miles in honor of the 1.6 million Americans living with T1D and raise $50 million to recognize Breakthrough T1D’s 50th anniversary.
In the Mountain West Chapter, walkers got creative with their fundraising and celebrations! While things make have looked different this year, Lyla’s Little Valentines hosted their annual zucchini bread fundraiser; Peter’s Pancreas Pacers and Miles for Dakota sewed masks and sold them for a donation; and Diabesties for a Cure designed and sold T1D-themed t-shirts.
