35 Faces of the Breakthrough T1D One Walk: Meet Lacey

35 Faces, 35 years of Walking, 35 Reasons to Give

I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes on November 10, 2014. Since then, my family has been on the roller coaster ride known to many as T1D. Last year was our first year walking and we raised over $4,500! My mom loves to share my story on social media – especially on Facebook and Instagram. It’s the easiest way to keep our friends and family up to date on what we’re planning and going through. I love the walk because it makes me feel special. My mom says it’s so easy to disconnect from the people around you from day to day but when we’re all walking together for the same reason, you feel the unity and it’s incredible! Dealing with type 1 can make you feel very isolated, but at least one day of the year that’s not the case! I also loved meeting Scooby and Shaggy. I want people to know that you can still dance with diabetes! My mom wants there to be more awareness for T1D. People often have a fear of the unknown and fill in the blanks with things they’ve heard or assumed about diabetes both 1 & 2. People with T1D go through so much and it isn’t something easily explained or shown. T1D literally changes your life in ways you can’t possibly prepare for. Patience, understanding, and a willingness to go the extra mile and learn about this disease will mean the world to families with a diabetic.
