European Association for the Study of Diabetes (EASD) Annual Meeting

Leading researchers from around the world will gather for the annual meeting of the European Association for the Study of Diabetes (EASD). At this year’s meeting, which will take place virtually from September 22-25, more than 40 studies will be presented by Breakthrough T1D researchers, funded now or in the past, working to find cures for type 1 diabetes (T1D) and improve the lives of those living with the disease today.

  • Dana Lewis, who founded the open source artificial pancreas system movement, and Henk-Jan Aanstoot, M.D., Ph.D., will debate pros and cons of open source vs. commercial closed loop systems.
  • Alexandra Smink, Ph.D., a Breakthrough T1D-funded postdoctoral fellow who was one of four people chosen to take part in the Rising Star Symposium, will present on mimicking the pancreas and preventing rejection within an islet transplantation device.
  • We will hear from Chantal Mathieu, M.D., Ph.D., Maria Gomez, Ph.D., and Adrian Vella, M.D., about the Innovative Medicines Initiative (IMI), a European public-private partnership aiming to speed up the development of better and safer medicines, which funds INNODIA, BEAT-DKD and Hypo-RESOLVE, all of which have Breakthrough T1D grants.
  • Maria Cristina Nostro, Ph.D., a former Breakthrough T1D-funded postdoctoral fellow and two time grantee, will discuss how stem cells can model pancreatic development and diabetes, in an EASD/Breakthrough T1D Symposium.
  • Breakthrough T1D-funded investigators Craig Beall, Ph.D., Peter Jacobs, Ph.D., Pratik Choudhary, M.D., Ph.D., and Paul McKeigue, Ph.D., will discuss low blood sugar, termed hypoglycemia, and new approaches to reducing this fearful complication of diabetes.
